It is REALLY scary to read that car thefts happening at Central. I never really thought about it until I read it in the Recorder. The author of the piece, Tara, opened my eyes to this problem. It is amazing to me because she reported that the cars being stolen are mostly Hondas and Acuras. I wonder why this is the case? The people that are doing this act must enjoy stealing those brands. There are ways to help you be safe out there with your car. These kinds of crimes happen all over the world and people don't really realize it until it happens near you.
The campus police are really active in trying to help you feel more comfortable on campus. When these thefts happen I believe it is extremely important to have a campus newspaper. I think I would have never known that these things were happening if it wasn't for the article in the Recorder. Futhermore, it makes you wonder about America and what happens in other states.Reading in other newspapers about crimes like these help you wake up and take notice about your surroundings, even more than before. I remember my sister telling me, she graduated about eight years ago from CCSU, that when she came here people were stealing cars a lot and hurting people along the way. It seems like things haven't changed much, but we should always keep our eyes opened and our ears. This way you are safer.

Another anthrax scare and this time it all unfolds in our state of Connecticut. Inhalation anthrax took the life of a 94 year old woman of Oxford. Can you imagine? She lived through it all and anthrax had to take her life. It seems so sad to think about it. What makes it more horrible is the fact that no one knows exactly how this elderly lady contracted the disease. She hardly left her house said neighbors in the news. She only went to the post office and to get her hair done. Her house was tested, her mail was tested, and the post office she used was tested and still nothing. Gosh this sounds really scary because you just don't know how she got it. Hopefully, more investigations will be done to determine the factors, but it is up to the country to figure this out. It is a complete mystery that shocks everyone involved not only her family. It is a pretty sad thing to see her have such a healthy life until this point. It makes you wonder what is exactly going on with this disease. How did she get it and why?

I want to be a school teacher and I find it very important to know what is in the news regarding controversial topics. Today I found an articlethat addressed an issue of drug testing. I think, personally, that it is extremely important to test individuals in school. Teachers and the administration want to make a safe environment for the rest of the students. There are some individuals that believe this form of random testing is wrong. I believe that if the administration has reason to believe that someone may have drugs in the school then they should be allowed to check it out further. I also believe that the administration can't just open lockers without a good reason to do so. The students and the safety of the students is one of the most important aspects and the school systems want to ensure that with random tests. There are those extreme cases, but we all have to keep in mind the well-being of the scholars.

This topic has nothing to do with Anthrax or September 11, yes readers I'm writing something off the topic, it is something that might not interest others. The topic I want to write about is the closing of AC Peterson's Restaurant in West Hartford, Connecticut. This restaurant had amazing ice cream. Ever since I was a little girl, I would go to AC for ice cream, no not Friendleys or Baskin Robins, AC Peterson's ice cream.
Newport Creamy manufactured this ice cream. In the beginning of summer the restaurant changed its name to "Newport Creamy." I was fine with that ( a little sad because I was use to the name before), but now in the beginning of October my restaurant has closed down. The restaurant had a wonderful atmosphere and the prices were low ( really rare these days). Now, after thirty or more years of being opened for business, it has been shut down. The West Hartford newspaper doesn't mention anything and I have been looking it up in the Internet (nothing). I will continue to search the reasons why this happened to a restaurant I considered like "Cheers." It is pretty sad to see it go, but I guess all great things have their days.

Are we suppose to live our lives in complete fear? If it isn't bad enough that there are other diseases out there killing loved ones, we have to be afraid of anthrax. Should we wear gloves before opening our mail now? It is awful that we have to watch our backs constantly in fear of even breathing. I think that we shouldn't be frightened and threatened. We should live our lives to the fullest, even though poor helpless postal workers are becoming more frightened to even go to work because of the letters they have been receiving for other individuals. Recently, I went to a Board of Education meeting for my Journalism II class and found it to be very interesting. This meeting took place in West Hartford, Connecticut and it had your basic agenda for the rest of the year, but for the last hour of the meeting it discussed the September 11 attack. The superintendent, Dr. Sklarz decided to cancel all field trips for the rest of the year.
He thought it was best to cancel field trips leaving the state of Connecticut and over seas. The board members approved his decision and thought that it was in the best interest of the students and facility involved with the trips. There were two high school students in the meeting that disagreed with this decision. They found it to be not fair and just to treat elementary students and high school students the same. These boys were precise and had strong opinions about the matter.
I found this to be very educational because I liked the idea that students were entitled to speak their minds about the decision. However, I thought that the decision was fair because what is happening with the country is a serious matter and children should be safe. Teachers should discuss these issues about terrorism to students openly in order to answer any questions they might have. Students should feel free to ask questions. Children should rely on teachers for guidance and support.

Yesterday, I read in the Washington Post written by Dana Milbank that Bush's administration officials say that America will have more terrorist activity. Where? When? How? Are they preparing us? These are the questions I have on my mind. I know that they are suppose to tell the American public to be prepared for the battle that we are going to have in these upcoming months, or even years, but should they scare us even more. We have a total of 5,756 people either missing or dead in New York because of these terrorist attacks. I know that the government is trying the best they can with security; they have even done undercover work going to airports and trying to figure out which airports have the strongest security. It is pretty scary to find out that we, in Hartford, Connecticut, had a security guard sleeping on the job. The security guard should have been paying attention to his work, at least be awake, and functioning as a human being. If a terrorist walked right passed that guard he would have no problem. Should we take that risk with our lives? America should have been paying attention to our security problems before this terrible attack occured. However, we have to take this experience, unfortunately for the families and victims, as an eye opener and protect the American people.
